Research Question
How do we as teachers develop strategies that allow our students to find value in each other and form a larger community of learning?
We will design systems that encourage and motivate students to work together and want to be part of a larger community.
Theory of Action
If we create a lesson that requires students to talk with other students, work together, and come up with new ideas, students will start to see that they can create more together than they could alone.
We’ll see if it’s working by looking at students’ worksheets.
Focus Students
Jasmine is a hardworking student who is both outgoing and well respected by her peers. She has a strong work ethic but has needs in persevering through work when it gets more difficult. Jasmine is a strong reader but has needs in writing and writing legibility.
Christian is an intelligent student who has strenghts in completing his work on time, working well in small group situations and is a great writer. Christian succeeds when he is given a task that he can complete on his own, and has needs on working together with others in larger social settings and voicing his opinion in front of others.
Content Understanding Goals
After having done individual country research for MUN conference, students will collaborate with others of the same country to compare & contrast their findings allowing them to more accurately represent their country while also allowing them to interact with their peers who are both similar and different from them while showing each other respect.
Standards
I interact with people who are similar to and different from me, and I show respect to all people. DI-6-8.7
Compare and contrast the information gained from experiments, simulations, video, ormultimedia sources from reading a text on the same topic. RSLSS 6-8.9
Student Data
After completing the Model UN activity, students hung up their graphic organizers on the wall. Here are 9 examples of students work.

Cycle 3 PDSA
Gallery Walks & Student Critique
PDSA Cycles have consistently been a productive method of improving my teaching style. Trying something new, however small, and then looking at the data, talking with students, and seeing how it impacts my classroom has really helped me better understand what works and what doesn’t. For our two PDSA cycles during Cycle 3 we wanted to create opportunities for students to look at each other’s work and give each other positive feedback and kind, helpful, and specific critiques. Below are pictures of students engaging in a gallery walk and giving feedback while working on a project during my Humanities class.
After students completed a gallery walk where they looked at each others’ work, and gave feedback, I asked students to write on an exit ticket the most helpful feedback they got for their work. Students had participated in gallery walks and critique sessions before, but this was the first time I asked them to share the feedback they recieved with me. Below are examples of the student exit tickets.
Looking at other peoples work has been a great way to get students to see the value in working together. Critique is a different form of collaboration than what I usually think about, but at it’s heart, it’s still students working together to try create something new. Many of the exit tickets show that even though the feedback might not have been extremely helpful, it was able to furhter their thinking and bring a new perspective to their project work. I’ ll definitely continue to do gallery walks and have students give each other feedback going forward.
